A special WADA tribute:

Chuck Coulthart WADA Retired AD Golf Outing

By Mike Bates

Information Coordinator, WADA

One of highlights every year for many retired athletic directors is the annual WADA Retired A.D. Golf Outing sponsored by the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association (WADA).

Now, when they gather each fall, the event will have a new, special title.

“Henceforth, the event will be called the Chuck Coulthart WADA
Retired A.D. Golf Outing,” said Jeff Sitz of Wisconsin Lutheran High School when announcing the
change to the WADA membership at the recent WADA Workshop.  “It is a great tribute to a great
man, one who did many wonderful things regarding that golf outing for many years,” added Sitz,

now the WADA Past-President.

Coulthart passed away Sept. 15, just days before the 2006 WADA Retired Golf Outing was scheduled to tee off
at the Evergreen Country Club just north of Elkhorn, located about 45 miles southwest of Milwaukee.  Coulthart organized the event for many years, but he did more than just collect green fees, arrange for carts, plan for the dinner and keep tabs on the hole prizes.
He truly made it a fun and memorable time.  Now,
it’s WADA’s turn to always remember what Coulthart did
for the event, which last fall marked its 10th anniversary.
The late Coulthart was the long-time athletic director
at Whitewater High School.  He was a remarkable man
whose life touched hundreds of fellow ADs, coaches and
teachers, athletes, sports officials, and fans.  With the help

Chuck Coulthart

of Doug Parker, now the AD at Whitewater, here are some memories of Coulthart:

Remembering Chuck Coulthart

Chuck wore many hats in the community.  He was the Recreation Director for the city from 1969 to 1976 while teaching part-time at the high school.  Upon his resignation from the city, he became a coach and the AD for the high school.  As a WIAA official from 1957 to 2004, Coulthart worked football, basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball events for nearly 50 years.  He also
was a city council member from ’90 to ’94, serving as president his last 2 years, and he was on the Whitewater Aquatics Center Board from 2001 to ’06.

A 1961 grad of UW-Whitewater, he was a 4-year letterwinner in football for the legendary Coach Forrest Perkins.  Coulthart was inducted into the Warhawks' Hall of Fame in ’79.  He served as the treasurer of the school’s “W” Club from ’63 to 2001.  He was a WIAC Football Observer from ’90 to 2005, and he served the Hall of Fame Board at the college from ’85 until just before passing away at the age of 69.

Coulthart also was an active member of the Whitewater Jaycees, Rotary, and for the past 26 years, the Kiwanis.  He received the Outstanding Jaycee Award, Community Distinguished Service Award, and the George M. Hixon Fellow Award through the Kiwanis.  Devoted to his wife, Jo, and two sons, Tim and Craig, Coulthart was also a recipient of the WADA Retired AD Award of Merit.

He loved to golf, and life was good if that happened every day.  One year, Coulthart played golf on Christmas Day in Whitewater.  Twice he had a hole-in-one.  Two of his shortest, but best, trips were to Augusta to witness the Masters with Jo and other PGA members from Wisconsin.

Not only will he be remembered for his many contributions in Whitewater and to the WADA, but now retired AD’s from across Wisconsin will fondly recall him when they gather each fall – for
the Chuck Coulthart WADA Retired A.D. Golf Outing.
