WADA District #1 Spring Caucus Meeting

Wednesday April 3, 2002

Called to order at 10:00 am

1. Agenda, Attendance, years of service sheet handed out.

2. Retiring AD's: Jim Evans and Ted Ash.

3. WADA & NIAAA Membership Benefits Revised

Push for more members to join both.

NIAAA dues from $37.00-$60.00 brought up - Big increase for what purpose?

NFHS concern on requiring stamps on balls, bats and now possibly uniforms.

Concern that NIAAA & NFHS in general over regulated - for what purpose?

4. District #1 Athletic Director of the Year: Jim Evans, Ashland.

nominated by Jackie Gunderson & Steve Salisbury. John Ball, New Richmond, also nominated.

5. District #1 Distinguished Service Award: Steve Baier, Bloomer.

nominated by Greg Botecher - Also nominated Paul & Patti Naglosky from Shell Lake.

6. WIAA Sports Advisory Committee Reports Discussed.

Agenda items will be posted on WIAA web site at www.wiaa.wi.org for AD's to preview. AD's can preview and offer their input to district reps prior to Sports Advisory Committee meetings. Members urged to check WIAA and WADA web site www.wadawi.org as part of their regular routine.

Discussion on 7 Division Football, and seeding in Volleyball and Basketball.

7. Members were asked to consider running for WADA Vice-President position and the November workshop.

Administration approval needed and deadline is October 1, 2002. Call Jim Campbell or Brad Nemec if interested.

8. WADA Golf Meeting is Monday June 24, 2002.

At the Ridges Course in Wisconsin Rapids. Members need to register by May 1st. Registration can be obtained from the web site at www.wadawi.org.

9. The WADA Fall Workshop will be November 10-12, 2002.

At the Paper Valley in Appleton. Members encouraged to get their room reservations in early.

Possible mini-session to consider: 1) Concerns about the future of recruitment in the state and open enrollment. Possible option to bring in AD's from Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota who have dealt with this for several years. Steve Salisbury, Rice Lake, has connection for possible presenters on the topic.

2) Relationship between AD's and Conference Commissioners. Wendell Uutala can present. 3) Co-Curricular Code Session.

Leadership Training and CAA exam offered at Fall Workshop.

Discussion of Spring Workshop was addressed - majority of members present wished to stay in the fall.

2003 Benefit Suggestion - Leather briefcase.

10. WIAA Annual Meeting - April 17, 2002 in Stevens Point.

Summer Contract Rule and Open Gyms discussed at length.

Question what is needed for evidence for enforcement of summer contract rule, open gyms, and what are the consequences.

Members Majority - all or none reference to contract rule.

11. Members were given Door Prize / Vacation Solicitation Form

Encouraged to go after from their communities. Suggested to ask your local chambers to put a package together for promotion in your community.

12. Articles for WADA/NIAAA Newsletter

Encouraged to do and send to Wade Labecki (web page).

13. NIAAA Convention - December 11-16, 2002 in San Antonio Texas.

Bdget app. $1200.00 for workshop.

NIAAA Delegates selected at fall workshop.

14. District #1 Position open -

Shell Lake - P.E. / Coaching.

Webster - Head Football.

15. Contests Needed.

Ashland - Softball this spring.

Northwestern - Football scrimmage next fall.

Lake Holcombe - Wrestling.

Euipment needed - Balance Beam - Prairie Farm.

16. ASEP Courses at Rice Lake in August - Friday Night and Sat - $150.00- Check with Steve Salisbury.

17. CESA Athletic Bid - only 10 school used this Year.

All schools are paying for it. Encourage all schools to use bid so athletic equipment will be cheaper.

18. Fall District Caucus Meeting: Sunday Nov. 10, 2002, Paper Valley.

19. Don Rappel, Norm Ross & Brad Chiszar won golf outings at Eau Claire, Spooner and Somerset. Wndell Uutala donated a 4 day pass to the Greater Milwaukee Open (GMO) won by Sue Chandler.
