11. The members are reminded that the WIAA annual meeting will be Wednesday April 30 in Wausau (Rock Inn).
12. Steve Salisbury was asked to put on the list as a presider at mini-sessions.
13. Specific issues for WADA/WIAA - convention and annual meeting.
a. Calendar for spring sports - baseball and track starting late in 2004 a concern. (Baseball one season in the near future?)
b. Start of school date in 2004 - after Sept. 1 or after Labor Day - concern with losing fall football coaches and athletes if after Labor Day. All members want the August starting date back with the school having the option.
c. Storage of officials discussed in great length - encouraged to recruit as many as possible, encourage universities to bring back official courses, hire young officials if ready, don’t hire 2 1/2 3 years in advance, rate and give positive feed back to J.V./ Jr. High officials, hire volleyball officials for J.V. and keep separate for varsity. Offer official courses across the state - similar to ASEP Course (taught by retired officials).
d. Pole vault discussed - big concern with giving out pole but no helmet for summer members felt that it should be the same as other sports for equipment - (none). Big concern that the cost of updating pole vault pits is getting way out of hand and many schools are dropping pole vault because of cost.
e. Freshman 5th quarter - Question was addressed is this for an extra quarter for those that didn’t play because of large numbers or low numbers to play 9th grade 8 J.V. 7 - not a problem in schools District #1.
f. Recruiting/ promoting - members in District #1 didn’t have a big issue with this and no schools indicated a concern that they are having "youth nights" in their schools.
g. Residing/Transfer Rule-After discussion members were reminded that all students who transfer new into your district must be assumed ineligible until you do your background check and clear them to participate.
h. Spirit and Cheer Competition-A handful of schools have this and are concerned that now since WIAA has endorsed the state competition they may have to add to budget and have season regulations.
i. Fund Raising with Pledges for free throws made in basketball and pins in wrestling. Discussed and group was against this.
j. WIAA Rules Meetings-Big concern for schools to sent coaches to meetings- many are 2 hours away for a 15-20 minute meeting. Many oppose having coaches go to rule meeting at all or at least have it available through ITV in your own schools for your coaching staff.
14. Announcements:
a. All WADA members must check their e-mail and WADA web site on a daily basis for critical information/announcements.
b. Volunteers are needed for an active committee to revamp the officials rating system. Contact Doug Chickering if interested.
c. The NIAAA Convention will be in Indianapolis December 13-17. Brad Nemec will be running for a national at Large position. All AD’s are encouraged to take advantage to attend National Convention this close to state and support Brad.
d. The WIAA State Girls Basketball will be at the Alliant Energy Center in 2004.
e. WIAA State Soccer will be in Milwaukee or Madison-Carthage College not an option.
15. Games Wanted
Hurley-softball games this spring
Shell Lake j.v. baseball games this spring
16. District 1 representative for WADA and Gender Represenative-election set for 2003 fall workshop- last year term for Jim Campbell and Jackie Gunderson.
17. Thank you to Jon Griffith-Spooner for taking minutes.
Meeting adjourned at 12:15 pm
