WADA DISTRICT II SPRING CAUCUS MINUTES

Blackjack Supper Club – Antigo, WI.

Wednesday, April 9, 2003

  1. The meeting was called to order at 12:20 p.m. by Bill Vickroy
  2. The 32 A.D.’s in attendance introduced themselves…..the only A.D. at the meeting who is retiring was Mike Laliberte of Wausau West. (Mike and any other retiring A.D.’s who read the notes need to contact Don Swanson at the following address: 316 Oakland Avenue, Janesville, WI 53545…this will get you on the retired A.D. list and you will get the newsletter, workshop info, etc.)
  3. Congratulations to State WIAA Tournament participants: Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln and Wausau West (Hockey) and Stratford, Marshfield and Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln (State Champion) in Team Wrestling.
  4. Articles for the WADA Insights newsletter are needed! AD’s are encouraged to contribute…a list of possible topics was distributed. Articles are to be e-mailed to Julie Kluge at jak.athletics.wisc.edu or Geoff Steinbach at steinbach@ahs.k12.wi.us
  5. Ron Swanson of Wabeno nominated Charles(Chuck) Enders of Laona as District II Athletic Director of the Year….two other nominations were declined due to previous receipt of this award. J. Overgaard of Everest moved for unanimous approval and Chuck Enders was elected AD of the Year.
  6. Noel Denniston of Pittsville nominated Gene Delissio, Sports Director of Marshfield’s WDLB as the District II Distinguished Service Award recepient. Mike Laliberte moved for unanimous approval and Gene was elected as DSA .
  7. Any individuals interested in running for the position of WADA Vice President at the November 2003 workshop must notify Bill Vickroy, Elections Chair, no later than October 1, 2003….a letter of support from your superintendent and principal are mandatory by the same date. Pete Miller of Merrill will answer any questions about the responsibilities of the job.
  8. Elections at the November workshop will also include a WADA Gender Representative as well as rep’s for Districts 1, 3, 5 and 7.
  9. The annual WADA Golf Outing will be held at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids on Tuesday, July 22, 2003. An addition to the annual event will be the opportunity for individuals to take LTC 501 Intro Admin.…on Monday, 7/21/03, from 12 – 4pm at Rapids Lincoln and/or LTC 514 Challenging Personalities, from 5 – 9pm. In addition, the CAA Exam will be given Tuesday morning. Contact Bill Vickroy, Don Dalton, Mike Younggren or Mike Devine for LTC/CAA information.
  10. The annual WADA Workshop will be in Appleton on November 8-11, 2003. All AD’s are encouraged to solicit door prizes. Dist. II will now have its end-of-the-workshop District Door Prize determined/solicited by conference. A master list of rotations and schools involved will be created soon. The following 2 responsibilities were determined: Marawood for 2003(Josh Kubly of Newman, Coord.) and the Central Wisconsin for 2004(Tina Bacon of Witt-Birn., Coord.)
  11. Workshop Suggestion: It was suggested that there be an Athletic Director Round Table offering at the 2003 workshop. In addition, it was noted that the District caucuses will now be on Monday morning…..not on Sunday afternoon. Finally, the Packers have a Monday night game so hotel space at the Paper Valley will be tight……get registrations in ASAP to get a room at the Paper Valley.
  12.

WIAA Concerns and Topics of Discussion:

  13. Softball starting date for 2004 season….Supposedly the Coaches association does not want to start later like baseball. Some in attendance felt that this is a Southern Wisconsin "push"….we like the later start in the conferences up north.
  14. Pole Vault…..mats back-ordered….use of the weight chart for poles and vaulters must be used at all meets.
  15. 5th quarter in 9th grade basketball….not an issue or practice in Dist. II.
  16. Spirit and Cheer competition…no interest in varsity competition.
  17. Use of e-mail by the WIAA is increasing…..keep up with your messages.
  18. Sport specific fund raisers…. Shoot for money, pins for money….danger of some of these practices becoming unsportsmanlike.
  19. 8th grade entertaianment…..all those in attendance feel it is necessary to let school districts honor "their own progrms." Example: A district should be able to bring all of its junior high players in for a youth football introduction at halftime. It is not recruitment but recognition of kids already in the system.
  20. Officials….AD’s, coaches and districts need to recruit young and new officitals…former players, former coaches, etc.
  21. NIAAA/NFHS Conference is Dec. 13-17, 2003, in Indianapolis. Brad Nemec of Somerset is running for office as an at-large representative. All AD’s are encouraged to attend with the closeness of the conference site. Car pool, bus, van, etc. are some suggestions for saving money.
  22. User Fees…..of those in attendance the lowest fee is $10 and the highest is $30. It looks like this is the direction we are going with budgets. Reduced lunch participants have fees waived. (More information from WIAA with D. Hauser’s April 2002 survey.)
  23. Bowling Interest: At least 3 schools have clubs….budget restraints may curb additions of bowling to the sports already offered.
  24. Those in attendance are in favor of opening up the opportunity to have more than one meeting with sports….as approved and coordinated by AD’s with coaches.
  25. Out of season contact is going to be changed….it should become a non-constitutional issue….to be determined by coaches’ sports advisory committees…more at the Annual WIAA Meeting…April 30…in WAUSAU, not Stevens Point. (Meeting: Stony Creek & lunch at Holiday Inn Express…both located across from each other at the Cedar Creek exit on I-39/US 53.
  26. The meeting was adjourned at 1:45 p.m.
