Janesvi1le, WI 53545).
Articles for the newsletter are to be sent to Randy Allen using e-mail to Randy
or the wadawi.org website.
Dick Fahrenholz was
nominated as District 4 Athletic Director or the Year by :Paul Engen (Appleton North),
seconded by Jim Smasal (Neenah). Ed Zepka
(Appletos West) moved to have nominations be closed, seconded by Gene Spindler (Menasha). Approved by unanimous vote.
Colette Kolstad
(Green Bay Preble) recommended Russ and Pat Janeshek for the Distinguished Service Award
for District 4. Ed Zepka (Appleton West) entered a motion for their selection and was
seconded by Jim Scandin (Menasha -R).
There was brief discussion encouraging
A.D.'s to run as candidates for the Vice-President's post for WADA. Brad Jodarski (Oshkosh
West) may be interested. All are aware it entails a 4-year commitment and obtaining
permission from one's district administrator.
Members were reminded that many slots are
open for the one summer golf outing at The Ridges in Wisconsin Rapids on Monday, June 25.
Tee-off is at 1 :00 pm. Dick Fahrenholz has the forms needed. The Retired A.D. golf outing
is slated for September 18, 2001 at the Evergreen in Elkhorn; interested retirees should
contact Don Swanson (see above).
The annual WADA Workshop will be held in Appleton on November 4,5, and 6; a
multi-year commitment has been made to the Radisson Paper Valley. Suggestions for
mini-sessions, sources for door prizes (the district is required to provide a major door
prize), and interest in being a presenter or a presider for sessions should be sent to
Dick Fahrenholz. Paul Engen asked who the headliners would be for the workshop; that
is unknown at this time. He mentioned Cathy DeVore of the University of Kentucky. Paul
volunteered to serve as a presider.
Leadership Training classes will be held in Appleton on June 9, 2001; they begin
at 1 :00 pm and will cost $64. Participants must sign up by May 1, 2001. Don Dalton
(Burlington-R) is in charge.
Mentoring of new A.D.s continues to be a desirable service: it was suggested that
each CONFERENCE within each district could select mentors to help others within its own
conference. Any information regarding this should be sent to Dick Fahrenholz. Mike Moureau
(Olympian Conf.) volunteered, as did Carl Paquet (Packerland Conf.)
- The WIAA Annual Meeting will be held April 25, 2001 in Wisconsin Rapids at the
Mead Inn. ADs were encouraged to pay
$37 (preferably from district funds) for NIAAA membership.
Discussion turned to concerns with WADA or the WlAA. Tom
Nygaard (Fond du Lac) mentioned that, at the last baseball coach's clinic presentation,
the ADs from some conferences indicated strong support for the proposed "third
baseball season". However, the coaches in those same conferences were split evenly;
there is no unanimous support for this -as has been insinuated. Their recommendation was
to retain the choice of spring or summer ball
Gene Strusz (Fox Valley Lutheran) expressed appreciation for
the 5-minute gap between JV and Varsity basketball games because of the improvement in
game management. Several others agreed, but some requested a reduction to 3 minutes. A few
wished to eliminate it, primarily on school nights when games run late (Don Green-Random
Lake). Dick Fahrenholz indicated the boys basketball meeting he chaired preferred 3
minutes; Tom Nygaard (Fond du Lac) said the girls basketball meeting he chaired asked for
3 minutes as well.
Paul Engen expressed concern with the WISPREP website due to
abusive use by some students, who use the site to 'trash" other athletes, coaches,
parents, etc.
Paul questioned WADA and WIAA support of this website because
of the inappropriate message it sends. It was his recommendation to research this issue.
Mike Moureau (Hilbert) indicated similar problems with the, opendiary.com"
site. These incidents have resulted in disciplinary action at both schools.
On a related matter, Jim Smasal (Neenah) mentioned the
increasing cost in time for constantly updating websites; he suggested that ONE site -into
which other sites might link -might resolve this problem. Some conferences have gone to
ONE CONFERENCE WEBSITE to deal with the time issue. These schools pay a fee to belong to
it, and individuals are paid in the various schools to update the material regularly. Many
felt the conference approach was a better one. Anyone with information regarding this
should send it to Dick Fahrenholz.
Jim Smasal (Neenah) reminded all that voting would take place
for Advisory Council positions next week; he is on the ballot for a second tem1 and would
appreciate support.
Attendees were given an "e-mail copy" from Randy
Allen suggesting various names for the WADA newsletter. ADs indicated their
preferences.
Jim Scandin (Menasha -R) moved for adjournment and was
seconded by Gene Spindler (Menasha).
